Design thinking involves trying to include all possible events that could in any way affect the establishment of a new product or a system of services. The occurrence of ‘wicked’ problems should be considered during designing anything new. Trying different and even impossible alternatives, and ways of doing things may result in better solutions. Remember to design for a sustainable life and try to reduce the amount of artificial components of a design. Design with engineering, environmental etc. knowledge will help the artefacts become more reliable and doable. —Cameo

The fact that Buchanan outlines how design affects different walks of life by listing and explaining the different ‘fields’ or four broad areas of which design is explored especially by those who do not classify themselves as designers is interesting. This talks about how design overlaps into anything that involves creating or producing a mechanism or system for functionality, supporting his earlier claim that “the proper study of mankind is the science of design”. The idea of a linear model of design that involves a problem definition and a problem solution being a ‘synthetic’ methodology is accurate, as design is not linear, in fact it is anything but linear. Design faces problems throughout a design process, causing the fluctuation forwards and back again to achieve a certain aim and product specific to a population needs. There is never going to be one solution to a specific issue or problem in design, hence the rapid creation of products and systems that are forever being created in response to the latest and greatest tools. This inevitably leads back to the wicked problems and how evolving design confronts designers. Having no formula, wicked problems can be solved and even formed together, but only to create another problem. Never being able to be fixed, only reduced or influenced with design thinking, putting people and their needs first, bringing forward new solutions. —Phoebe Stefanidis

 

As the result of old liberal art, education was divided and subdivided thought it would gain knowledge from the specialised study. But it leads to a perception of lots of facts and values that lose connection with each other and daily life matters. Design thinking in this context is essential to enrich human life as it explores a real integration of knowledge which combines theory and practice. In four broad areas of our life which design is explored shows that design thinking is an integrative thinking that expands to a more broader area, it is not limited by specific design profession within each area. Design thinking introduces a synthetic way of problem-solving, which integrate and balance against each other. Wicked problems occur when design try to meet different population needs, values and where the ramification of the whole social system are confusing. Every wicked problem different, there is no single solution to a wicked problem. Placements used by the designer to make a design situation, identifying views, issues that are relevant and discover a working hypothesis where it can apply to a better product planning. But again, before the final result is known designer forms a plan what does not exist yet, which indeterminate wicked problems. Designers consideration and decision is controlled by their philosophy. Technology will evolve, problems will never stop. We must shape our philosophy and design thinking with better values like being selfless and caring others to reduce the problem.—Marcel Tjiang
