The New Antique

Case study curated by Alex Owen

With the disposable nature of todays society combined with the ever changing trends we throw out a colossal amount of stuff each year, surprisingly a lot of these things are still working and even if they are not still have value in a different kind of use. A verity of businesses have realised that people want something that was built to last and love the charm of things with an individual and exciting twist. For this reason the idea of antiques and product reuse is becoming increasingly popular, but not the type of antiques you would think. Forget the days of going into an antique shop to buy Royal Doulton figurines, elaborate clocks and pottery, people are now interested in odd little items that provide a real function but also include an element of character that cant be found in stores. This is a good thing for the buyer but also a good thing for the planet, not only has the materials and associated encapsulated energy been saved from going to landfill but the likelihood of that product being kept is a lot higher because of it’s individuality and consumer’s emotional connection to the product. Be it hard to find parts that will keep your old car running, records, clothes, advertisements or even just little boxes for this and that people are embracing the idea of giving new life to old products.

Advantages To The Concept Of Reusing Old Products Include:

  • Products contain individuality that makes them more desirable than current products and less likely to be thrown out.
  • Provides a financial turnover, acquisition of a new product but no new resources, associated energy and packaging.
  • Keeps existing products functioning by providing parts and components that are no longer manufactured but still in circulation, for example old car parts.

Why I Selected This Project

Every year humanity produces more and more goods to provide for the ever growing need of peoples desires to stay up to date with trends, new products and replacing existing items. With a huge accumulation of these products building up there is a opportunity for a lot of them to be reused or recycled before they end up in landfill. This case study is looking at buying and swapping of existing products as a way to combat waste and embrace re-use. This concept is an exciting one because of the opportunity that is embedded within it, the fact that the economy can still keep turning without the need for new resources to be collected and made into new products.

Embedded Values

By reusing or repurposing an existing item the concept of the modern consumer market is being reframed and the amount of waste is being reduced, while still providing for the desires of the current nature of the consumer market.(Reduction and Reframing)

The concept of swapping and buying pre-used products adds to the economy but also is not large enough to damage others. In saying this the trading of used goods dose help to reduce the strain on existing systems thus discouraging large entities from taking advantage of less powerful individuals. (Small Economy)

ebay

Ebay the online second hand retailer provides a global platform for people to buy and sell second hand goods. The concept is increasingly popular and while helping to provide for people needs also reduces the amount of items that would be otherwise deposed of. Another advantage of the concept of a web-sight like eBay is that there is a exchange of money created by the re-use of a product, this is an ideal scenario because no new material or energy is required to fill a consumers needs or wants yet there is an economic exchange created by the products re-use.
